MAN I LOVE WAY HE NARRATES THE STORY

A classic indeed The novel is set in the late seventies and is purportedly based on a similar incident in Ashok Leyland (?) and the author was said to be in the thick of action. The narrative is gripping and there isn't much fluff inspite of this being serialized in a weekly. The perspectives of that various characters is brought out well. When reading this after almost 40 years one cannot miss the following : One does not get a picture of Madras of the seventies. You could change the city to Madurai or Coimbatore and the novel would read the same. As with other works in the seventies there are two many brahmins - the communist, the industrialist, the adulterer, the feminist. If a Martian read the novel one cannot fault them for thinking Madras was inhibited only by brahmins that too from the Cauvery delta. The could be a function of the author's world view or reflection of the people who purchased magazines in the seventies. The characters 'think out loud' too often and there is lot of sermonising on 'understanding' women. Again the author is known to have started this trend which got him a large female following in those days. In spite of the above, this novel remains an epoch, one wonders if this would have turned into something great if the author did not have the constraint of writing for a weekly.

Some of the feminist comments were really refreshing, well thought out and nicely written. And that’s about it. The rest of the story is pretty much a mishmash of some of the Tamil movies that we have seen over and over again

The book is not fast paced and does not give you thrills at every chapter end. It only slowly builds the characters over its length and tries to establish their true senses. I'm writing this a few months after I finished the book. Blame it on my poor memory, I can barely now remember the communist side of the story but what still lingers on my mind are Shyamili and Savithiri. If these two women were to live today, I wouldn't think their fates can be any different. I liked the book because author's words helped visualize the story's world and was able to connect myself with the some of the characters. The arc is very predictable and does not have any sharp turn, which was ok for me in such a genre.

பாலகுமாரனின் முக்கியமான நாவல். கணேசன், சாவித்திரி, கோபாலன், சங்கரன், சியாமளி, ரங்கசாமி, பெருமாள் என ஒவ்வொரு கதா பாத்திரமும், அவரவர் ஆசா பாசங்களும், எண்ணங்களும், மன ஓட்டமும் கலந்து அறிமுகமாகிறார்கள். இவர்களை இணைக்கும் நூலிழையாய் ஒரு போராட்டம். கம்யூனிசத்தை கொஞ்சமாய் தொட்டுக்கொண்டு, பெண்ணை மதிப்போம் என்ற பிரதான கருத்தை வலுவாக சொல்லி இருக்கிறார். எண்பதுகளில் வெளி வந்த கதை. ஆனால் இன்றும், சியாமளிகளும், சாவித்திரிகளும், மன்னிகளும் இருக்கத்தான் செய்கிறார்கள். எது சரி எது தப்பு என்று எடை போடாமல், படித்தால் ஒரு அருமையான அனுபவம் கிட்டும்.

The way it has dealt with communism and workers problem on the one side and the plights of women in Indian society.. It was deep.. . . The plot starts with union strike in the leading tractor manufacturing factory and the murder of a true gentleman.. His wife savithri , the way she handles the aftermath.. . . Each and every character and their characteristics.. I mean it's wow.. Even the plight of the factory owner Rangasamy was justified.. There is no flaws in any character..They are as such as they are and as we are.. . . The persona of Shamili.. The sheer truth in that personality.. Truely deep.. This doesn't revolve around the story but it goes behind the characters.. . . Do do read this gem 😍

'என் இனிய இயந்திரா' விகடனில் தொடராக வந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. மதுரையை சுற்றிக் கொண்டிருந்த கழுதையின் கண் முன்னே ஒரு புதிய உலகம் விரிந்தது. அப்போது எங்களது பிசிக்ஸ் ஆசிரியை தனலட்சுமி மிஸ்சும், கெமிஸ்ட்ரி ஆசிரியை சுமதியும் தோழிகள். நாங்கள் இருவரும் வாசிப்பதை தெரிந்து கொண்டு பல புதிய ஆசிரியர்களை அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார்கள். அவர்களிடம் கடனாக பெற்றுத்தான் முதலில் 'மெர்க்குரிப் பூக்களை' வாசித்தேன் . அந்த வயதில் அந்தப் புத்தகத்தை வாசித்தபோது பெரும் புரட்சிகரமானதாக இருந்தது. குமுதம், விகடன் தொடர்கதைகளோடு ஒப்பிடுகையில், மிகவும் முற்போக்கானதாக இருந்தது. பல வருடங்களுக்கு பின்னர் இப்போது மீண்டும் வாசித்தேன். கொஞ்சம் 'blah' வென்று இருந்தது. அதன் முற்போக்குகள் போலியாக கூட தெரிந்தது. நான்தான் மாறிவிட்டேன் போல என்று நினைத்துக் கொண்டேன். சியமாளி, சாவித்ரி இருவரும் அன்றைய காலகட்டத்தின் சமூக விழுமியங்களை மீறுவது போல இருந்தாலும், அவர்களது வாழ்வு மீண்டும் அதன் சிறைக்குள்ளேயே அடைபட்டுவிடுவதை ஒப்புக் கொள்ள முடியவில்லை. அதுவரை இல்லாத முற்போக்கு பேசும் கோபாலன், சங்கரன் முதலியோராலும் அந்த கட்டுப்பெட்டித்தனத்தை தாண்ட முடியவில்லை. பாலகுமாரன் பெண்களுக்கு ஒரு புதிய உலகை சன்னலின் வழியே காட்டிவிட்டு, அது தேவையில்லை இப்படியே இருங்கள் என்று சொல்வதாகவே எனக்கு பட்டது. பெண்களும் அதனாலேயே அவரை கொண்டாடினார்களோ என்று தோன்றியது. ஒரு fetish போல இப்படியும் இருக்கலாம் ஆனால் அப்படியே இருப்போம் என்று ஆபத்தில்லாத கனவை, புத்திசாலித்தனமாக, எழுதியிருக்கிறார் என்றே தோன்றியது. மீள்வாசிப்பு சில நேரங்களில் நம் பிம்பங்களை உடைத்து விடுகிறது.

1981ல் எழுதப்பட்ட இந்த நாவல் தொழிலாளர்களின் வேலைநிறுத்தத்தை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டு போக போக வாழ்க்கை பாடங்கள் பலவற்றை நமக்கு கற்றுத் தருவதாகவே இருக்கின்றது. கணவனை இழந்த சாவித்திரி, ஃபேக்டரி தொழிலாளர் சங்க தலைவன் கோபாலன், ஃபேக்டர்யில் கணக்கு வேலை பார்க்கும் சங்கரன், சங்கரன் வீட்டில் குடியிருக்கும் சியாமளி, ஃபேக்டரி முதலாளி ரங்கசாமி என்று மைய்ய கதாபாத்திரங்கள் மற்றும் சில இடங்களில் மட்டுமே வந்துபோகும் சங்கரனின் அண்ணா மன்னி, ஃபேக்டரியில் வேலை பார்க்கும் நாராயண சாமி, ரங்கசாமியின் அம்மா, ரங்கசாமியின் PA, காவல் துறை அதிகாரி துரை சிங்கபெருமாள் என கதாபாத்திரங்கள் ஒவ்வொன்றையும் அழகாய் நேர்த்தியாய் எழுதியிருக்கிறார். ஒவ்வொருவரும் தங்கள் பங்கை அழகாய் செய்து செல்வது கதைக்கு பெரிய பலம். ஒரு மைய்ய கதை (தொழிலாளர்களின் வேலைநிறுத்தம், அப்போது நிகழும் ஒரு எதிர்பாரா மரணம்), ஒரு துணை கதை (சங்கரன் சியாமளி இடையே இருக்கும் உறவு) என்று தொடங்கிய இந்த நாவல் பக்கங்கள் செல்ல செல்ல இரண்டும் பின்னிப்பிணைந்து ஒன்றோடு ஒன்றாகிவிடுகிறது. ஆங்காங்கே கவிதைகள். காதல், காமம், பெண்களின் இல் வாழ்க்கையில் ஏற்படும் ஏக்கம், ஏமாற்றம், முதலாளியின் மனநிலை, தொழிலாளர் புரட்சி, கட்சியின் நிலைபாடு, அரசாங்கத்தின் நிலைபாடு, போலீஸ் அதிகாரிகளின் கடினமான பணி என அனைத்தையுமே பேசியிருக்கிறார். ஒருவரின் பார்வையில் இருந்து மட்டும் கதையை நகர்த்தாமல் ஆங்காங்கே கதையை சொல்பவர்கள் மாறி மாறி வரும் யுத்தி அருமையாகக் கையாளப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. அதிக இடங்களில் "சார் நீங்க மைண்ட் வாய்ஸ்னு நெனச்சு சத்தமா பேசிட்டு இருக்கீங்க" என்று சொல்லவேண்டும் போல் இருந்தது. அவ்வளவு மனக்குமுறல்கள். நாவலின் தொடக்கத்தில் இது கம்யூனிசம் பற்றியது என்ற எண்ணம் தோன்றினாலும் இதில் அதிகளவில் பேசப்பட்டு இருப்பது ஃபெமினிசம் தான் என்பது என் கருத்து. பெண்கள் சுதந்திரம் உடலளவு அல்ல மனதளவில் என்பதை பக்கத்துக்கு பக்கம் பேசுகிறார் பாலகுமாரன். அன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் இவர் அதிக அளவில் பெண்களை விசிறியாக கொண்டிருந்ததற்கு காரணம் இந்த நாவலை படித்தால் உங்களுக்கு புரிந்துவிடும். என்ன தான் இருந்தாலும் கடைசியில் சங்கரன் தன் மனைவியிடம் உனக்கு சமைக்க தெரியுமா வீடு சுத்தமா வைக்க தெரியுமா அது போதும் என்று சொல்வதை எப்படி எடுத்து கொள்வது என தெரியவில்லை 🤷🏻‍♀️

Really the best of Balakumaran. His lucid narration combined by excellent inter layering of multiple vignettes makes it a breezy and enjoyable read. But its no pulp it has its strength in its story the author draws inspiration from his personal life that makes it more authentic. Simply one of the finest novellas published in Tamil.

அருமை!!! ஒவ்வொரு கதாபாத்திரத்தையும் சிற்பம் செதுக்குவதுபோல் செதுக்கியுள்ளார் பாலகுமாரன் ஐயா.கதையை விவரிக்கும் விதம், உவமானங்கள், சொல்வளம் என்று எதை விடுத்து எதை பாரட்ட என்று படிக்போர் குழப்பமடைய நேரிடுகிறது.பெண்களின் இரண்டு துருவங்களையும் மிகவும் நேர்த்தியாக கையான்டிருப்பது இந்நாவளுக்கு பெரிய பலமாக அமைர்திருக்கிறது.மேலோட்டமாக பார்க்கையில் இந்நாவல் - கம்யூணிசம் பற்றியதாக இருந்தாலும் , என்னப்பொருத்த வரையில் இது சமூகத்தில் உள்ள ஒரு இயல்பான நினைப்பையே பரைசாற்றுவதாக இருக்கிறது.ஒரு முதலாலியாக ரங்கசாமி கதருவது - நியாயமானதே. போராட்டங்கள் வேண்டும். ஆனால் அது ஆக்கப்பூர்வமான போராட்டமாக இருக்கவேண்டியதின் அவசியத்தை அவரது கதரல்கள் மூலம் நாம்மை சிந்திக் வைக்கிரார் பாலகுமாரனவர்கள்.என்னை இந்த நாவலில் கவர்ந்த கதாபாத்திரம் - சியாமளி.சியாமளியின் தேவைகள் நியாயமானதே. ஒரு பெண் என்ற ரீதியில் அவற்றை பார்க்காமல் - ஒரு மனிதனின் தேவைகள் என்ன என்று நாம் நோக்குவோமானால் - ஒரு பாராட்டு, தனிமனித சுதந்திரம் அதிகபட்சமனது என்றென்ன முடியாது. நமது கலாசாரத்தில் பெண்களை கல்யாணம் என்ற சிறையில் வலுக்கட்டாயமாக தல்லுகிறோம். ஏன்? அவர்களுக்கும் ஒர் மனமுண்டு என்பதனை ஏன் மறுக்கின்றோம். சீதாப்பிராட்டி மாதிரி பெண்கள் பொருமை காக்கவேண்டும் என்று மட்டும்தானே மேடைக்கு மேடை பேசப்படுகிறது. ஏன் ஆண்கள் இராமணைப்போல் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று கூறப்படுவதில்லை?மெர்குரிப் பூக்களில் உள்ள சியாமளியின் நியாயங்களை இளைங்கர் சமுதாயம் உணரவேண்டும். தங்களுக்குல்லாக தான் தண்டாயுதபாணி மாதிரி இல்லாமல் சாரங்கனைப்போல் பெண் மனதை பரிந்துகொள்ளுகின்றவனாக இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று உறுதி கொல்லவேண்டும்.பெண்களும் சரஸ்வதிபோல கணவணை ஆராதிப்பவராக இருக்கவேண்டும்.இதுபோல் அனத்து கதாபாத்திரங்களின் தன்மையை அலசி ஆராய ஒரு நூல் போதாது.இது எனக்கு பாலகுமாரனைய்யா அவர்களின் முதல் புத்தகம். இதிலுள்ள கருத்து வளிமை என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்துவிட்டது.

Balamurugan is a good narrator, he has this excellent flow, u get sink in his writting... I think he believes in living life as it pleases rather than convincing ourself or sacrificing...

Communist நாவல் என்பதை விட ஒரு Feminist நாவலாகவே எனக்குப் பட்டது..! சியாமிளிக்கு சங்கரன் மேல் தோன்றிய (கள்ளக்)காதல், சங்கரனுக்கு அக்காதலின் மேல் உள்ள பார்வை, அதை தெரிந்துக்கொண்டு சமுதாயத்திற்காக பயப்படும் மன்னி ஒருபுறம்; கணேசன் இறந்த பின் கோபாலன் சாவித்திரிக்கு சொல்லும் I love you, விருப்பம் இருந்தும் அதை ஏற்க மறுத்து I love you too but as a friend என்று துளி கண்ணீர் சிந்தும் சாவித்திரி மறுபுறம்; 23 வயதான மூத்த பெண்ணை எப்படியேனும் தள்ளி விடப் பார்க்கும் நடுத்தர குடும்பத்து நாராயனசாமி என்று எழுத்துச்சித்தர் பாலகுமாரன் well portrayed and played with the perspectives...!

Communism and Gender equality runs parallel in this story. After a few chapters Gender equality is on the high tide till the end. The maturity of the four characters, the way they deal the things, the objective and constructive conversations among them may seem less possible but practical and should be adapted. Chapters 30,31 projects the author's deep realisation of his inner-self. Upon completion, I remembered: " I realized everyone is not a feminist, unfortunately. But I also feel like we should stop calling feminists ‘feminists’ and just start calling people who aren’t feminist ‘sexist’ – and then everyone else is just a human. You are either a normal person or a sexist.” _Maisie Williams aka Arya Stark(GOT) Highly Recommended to all.

கழிவரறை இருக்கை புத்தகத்தின் prequel என சொல்லலாம். மண வாழ்க்கை கசந்து போன பெண்ணுக்கு வழி என்ன? விவாக ரத்தா ? எல்லாருக்கும் முடியுமா? திருமணத்தின் போது தனக்கு என்ன வேண்டும் என எல்லாருக்கும் தெரியுமா? அப்படி குழந்தை எல்லாம் வந்த பிறகு தெரிந்தால் - அதன் வலி அந்த உறவு உலகத்தால் எவ்வளவு கொச்சையாக பார்க்கப்படும் என காட்டும் நல்ல உதாரணம். கதையின் climax is very predictable right from the beginning when narayanaswamy hitches a lift in the taxi. ஒரு வாராக வெளிமணுறவுகளின் சிக்கலையும் வலியையும் அனுபவபூர்வமாக சித்தரித்திருக்கிரார். பிள்ளை பெற்ற பிறகு அவைகளை மட்டும் பார்த்து வாழ்வதே உத்தமம் என வழி சொல்லி முடிப்பதாக தோன்றிற்று. Strike பற்றிய எழுத்துக்களில் பலமில்லை என பட்டது.

I enjoyed reading this novel for two important reasons: One, for the way it dealt with the complex vagaries of the Workers' Union and the position of the business management without adding any ideological hues. Second, for talking about the social status, the intricacies and the plight of being a women in our Indian society. In some respects(read as economic independence), women are indeed enjoying certain freedom unavailable to those before three decades(this book was published in 1981); however, in most of the respects the social problems still lingers on. Have we grown enough to accept divorce(not legally but socially) in our society today? Are we ready to accept a woman as virtuous who breaks away from a marriage just to re-marry a man with whom she falls in love subsequently? In spite of our famous '2 states' which sells as cup-cakes, how many love-birds are able to marry as per their heart desire despite the differences in caste, language, region etc? Ah! How many questions? And thanks to this book for posing them to me. However, in the end when Shankaran marries Kamatchi, who is adept at cooking, cleaning but shares not his interest in literature or poetry or arts, it just made me to draw a smirk in my face and ask the author, "இதற்குத்தான் 'நீயும்' ஆசைபட்டாய பாலகுமாரா?". P.S: Suppose if Shyamili had had a laptop with internet connectivity, Facebook, goodreads and other social networks, is it not true that there wouldn't be a need for Shankaran or fear in the name of honour or the estranged moral codes on sex imposed by this society? I suddenly realized how fortune I am to have been born and alive this minute, in this age. :)

பாலகுமாரன் எழுத்து சித்தர் என்று அழைக்கப்படுவதில் எந்த ஆச்சர்யமும் இல்லை. கம்யுனிசம், தொழிலாளர்கள் போராட்டம், இதனால் பறிக்கப்படும் உயிர், தொடர்ந்து நடக்கும் போராட்டம், வேண்டுமென்றோ எதிர்பாராத விதமாகவோ உள்ளிழுக்கப்படும் கதாபாத்திரங்கள், திருப்பங்கள்,முதலாளிக்கும் தொழிலாளிக்கும் உள்ள வித்யாசங்கள்,அதிகாரவர்கத்தின் அலட்சியம்/அரசியல், அன்றாட ஜீவனத்துக்கு போராடும் மக்கள் என பயணிக்கிறது மெர்குரி பூக்கள் . மிக சிறந்த நடையில் பாமரனுக்கும் புரியும் வகையில் எடுத்த எடுப்பில் படித்து முடிக்க தூண்டும் விறுவிறுப்போடு மெர்குரி பூக்கள் பூக்கின்றது :)
