An amazing novel on the shenanigans involved in Tamilnadu politics. Every incident mentioned in the novel happened later in real time.
Book 17 for the year. This political thriller by Sujata is like a primer course in Tamilnadu politics. Exposed the deep underbelly of corruption, favoritism, political murders, scandals and sex. The story traces the life of a 29 year old who contests and wins as an independent, goes on to become the speaker, exposes the sitting CM, offered the CM post but refuses due to a personal tragedy. The writing is typical Sujatha- sharp, insightful and caustic at times with an undercurrent of dry humour. Truly a pleasure to read.
An EPIC stuff from Vathiyar. A Racy Political novel which has the mixture Of Thriller/Lust. One can witness the Cold blooded GAME of POSITIONS by reading this. MUDHALVAN has reference from this Novel (Example : Raghuvaran's Character name "Aranganathan", Where the same type of Characterization has been done for "Aranga Ramanujam" inthis Story). Many Mass moments All Over. Has Full Potential to get into Celluloid. I Wish Shankar gives Soul for PADHAVIKAGA B-)
I will rate this one as One of Vathiyar's Best :)
That incidents mentioned still continue to happen in the same mode is a testament to our politics
Expected better from Sujatha.
The plot is basic which can be executed in a fantastic way by authors like Sujatha. But he disappointed us. It's not upto the level relatively compared to other books of the author. It gives a feeling of unwanted sex scenes which was not connected to the story properly and gave a feeling of disgust. The book is not gripping the readers.
An average book..
"A GRIPPING NOVEL from SUJATHA"
The story is set in Tamil Nadu during late 70s or early 80s (though not given clearly) when every political leader was corrupted to the core and lawlessness was the state of affairs. At the same time, Dhanraj (the protagonist) starts his political life by entering the Assembly as an independent candidate and maintains his political integrity throughout the story. Among other politicians who stoops to extreme end for want of power, he rather remains unconcerned and unfettered of power. Nonetheless, as the old cliche 'nobody is perfect' would say, he is not virtuous in personal life and his darker side gets exposed due to which he happens to lose what he considered very significant in life.
In tamil literature, there are very few political novels and amidst them "Pathavikaga" has a special place not merely because it is the only political novel written by Sujatha but owing to its compelling narrative and the relevance of the story to present politics in Tamil Nadu although it was written almost three decades ago. Similar incidents as narrated in the story happened even recently in TN (for instance, hiding out the MLAs) and what it goes to show is years may change but the dirty politics in our country is not likely to and probably will never. The characters portrayed in this novel need a special mention as they are so real that they reflect the conscience of political leaders in our country. This novel is quite lengthy comparing to other works of the author. Be that as it may, the reader will not be even slightly bored.
On the whole, a must read for its political flavour!
Not only political Position, if we consider Fatherhood, husbandhood as also a pathavi then this book opens a new dimension. Jamuna's husband character is good. Should have developed it more.
Sujatha was truly prescient in describing certain aspects of the ugly Tamil Nadu politics.
With no well-defined protagonist, with many characters oozing negativity, a non-tragic ending is not possible. Notwithstanding that, this is one of Sujatha’s best and a must read for his fans.
