சென்னை நகரத்தைக் குறித்து இதுவரை எழுதப்பட்ட அனைத்துப் புத்தகங்களிலிருந்தும் இந்நூல் முற்றிலும் வேறுபடுகிறது. ஏனெனில் இது அந்நகரத்தின் வரலாறு அல்ல. அந்நகரத்திலேயே பிறந்து வளர்ந்த ஒருவனின் கதையுமல்ல. ஊர் ஊராக, பேட்டை பேட்டையாக, தெருத்தெருவாக சுற்றிக் காண்பிக்கும் சுற்றுலாக் கையேடும் அல்ல. இது ஒரு தனி மனிதனின் ஆன்மா, ஒரு பெரு நகரத்தின் ஆன்மாவுடன் இரண்டறக் கலக்கும் பரவசக் கணத்தைப் படம்பிடிக்கிறது. பா.ரா வின் நடை நான் எப்போதும் பா.ரா வின் நடையைத் தொடர்ந்து வருகிறேன்.உண்மைக்கு அவர் ஒப்பனை செய்வது இலக்கிய வழக்கமாயினும் அது ஒப்பனை என்றே தெரியாத நறுவிசான பூச்சு இந்த புத்தகத்திலும் இருக்கிறது.சக சென்னைவாசியாக பா.ரா நடமாடிய இடங்களிலும் காலங்களிலும் நானும் பயணித்திருப்பது அலைகள் அரிக்கும் காலடி மண்ணாக உணரச் செய்கிறது.என்னதான் அந்த மண் நழுவிக் கொண்டிருந்தாலும் நம் கால்கள்அடுத்த அடுக்கு மண் மீதுதான் நின்று கொண்டிருக்கும்.இருந்தாலும் சுகமான சறுக்கலாகவே ரசிக்க வைக்கும்.அந்த தள்ளாட்டத்தை இந்த புத்தகம் தருவது ஒரு சுகானுபவம்.

ஆதியிலே நகரமும் நானும் இருந்தோம் -பா.ராகவன். Being a chennaiite all my life, this books resonates so much with me.. This book is neither an account of chennai's history or personal account of author's tour of the city. It consists of various stories and experiences that each place had given him and how every place of living contributes to an individual's growth. The most interesting parts were about the few places which used to be landmarks of chennai, but then how it just got closed/lost in the midst of all developments - like the sapphire theatre, landmark book store.. How the author used to spend his time at devaneya pavanar library during his college days - witnessing many old people coming there to escape from their chaos from home. His weekend trips from kelambakkam to saidapet and meeting all his relatives there.. How west mambalam still remains an traditional place and consists of most of old age population.. His divine experiences with ramakrishna math and Thiruvattriyur temple.. Storms that had striked chennai and how we overcome that, water scarcity - தண்ணீர் இல்லாமல் போவது என்ற பிரச்சினை இப்போது தண்ணீருக்கு அதிகமாக செலவழிப்பது ஆக மாறியுள்ளது. The irony where we concentrate so much in infrastructure development but couldn't think/foresee about basic necessities - this hit me so hard .. i.e if you are a travellling even for half a day in chennai in public transport system to visit some places, you don't find a public toilet and you end up controlling yourself ( especially women). The author quotes sarcastically that hopefully govt will start building toilets after the current metro projects are completed.. Such a wonderful listening to this as an audio book.. It bought a lot of memories of my association with many places in chennai and also reminded that there is still a lot to explore and enjoy in this great city..

This was not the book I thought it would be. Par for the course, since Chennai is not the same for two people who grew up in the same city during the same time. Written during the lockdown when the city was brought to it's knees, the author tries to remember the Chennai he knew through various memories associated with the city as a healing process. There are vignettes of history of the city, but it is dominated by the writing circuit and the author's take on the struggles. Some chapters had my full heart. There is one chapter that talks about the hillocks of Chennai and one on the work that is continuously ongoing from chrompet to Anna Salai. There was trivia about beef consumption and origin of Burma bazaar. Most of the book I was comparing notes with the Chennai I knew, i grew up in and was trying to find resonance. The only chapters that I was able to relate to was Landmark books (meeting friends there and the occasional running into celebs) and one on the Devanar Pavanar library that saw me, on my low days. Cities, standalone, don't have memories. It's the people and their stories that make them belong to a city. I liked the book.
