Panithirai (Veil of Mist) is book II in the Udhayabanu historical fiction series. This series is a sequel to author's well known earlier works - Rajakesari and Cherar Kottai.

Early 11th Century CE. Chōḷa dancer Nakkan Maduravāsaki decides to undertake the royal assignment at Capital city Thanjāvūr big temple and starts her journey from Tiruvidaimarudur. She is afraid that her long buried past, which has been haunting her for a while, is waiting to unravel itself at Thanjāvūr. After much hesitation, she decides to go anyway and face fate whatever that may be.

Thanjāvūr welcomes her with clasped hands. Efforts are underway to build the massive big temple. The main administrative team headed by Tennavan Mūvēnda Vēlār is busy night and day in giving shape and form to the lofty vision of the emperor. Madura involves herself with the team and commits herself to the project. The Saiva saint who met her earlier in Tiruvārūr, meets her again in Thanjāvūr and provides his blessings.

Finally she meets the man who unravels her mysterious past. Who is she, really? What about her family background? Who is her father? and why did he abandon his family when she was just five years old ? Above all… how is her past related to the present investigations and the assassination attempt on King Rājarāja Chōḷa?

Udhayabānu - Panithirai (Veil of mist) is a continuation of riveting multi part historical tale set in ancient Chōḷa, Chēra and Paṇdya countries - involving several characters and a complex interconnected storyline. It is a follow up to the earlier works by the same author, viz. Rājakēsari, Chērar Kōttai and Udhayabānu - Kārmēgam. Udayabhanu series ( karmegam, panithirai and theempunal) of Gokul are quite different in their scope of story and narrative technique than his earlier books of Rajakesari and Cherar Kottai. More of a detailed oriented approach rather than being a racy thriller, udayabhanu series brings out the essence of common men in historical era. The role of spies and warriors in shaping a kingdom, their personal sacrifices are highlighted. Life and contribution of a dancer woman Thalaikoli Nakkan Mathura is described in a detailed way. But the story of one woman's life is only a testament to the role people played in building the Tanjore periya koil.

Like the second half of Udhayabhanu - Karmegam, this book is solely dedicated to Madhura and her story. Following her invitation to be one of the 400 temple dance artists, she goes to Thanjavur to meet Moovenda Velar to understand her roles and responsibilities. As the construction is still in its early stages, it would take time for her to move to the capital. In the meantime, she is asked to spread awareness among the common folk of the Chola kingdom about the temple project through dance, drama, and art. There are some interesting tidbits about the lives of her parents and Peraraiyar (an official in the imperial Chola government, who also happens to be their relative). Some parallels are drawn between the events in the earlier novels and this flashback. Madhura moves to the capital eventually, and the author has briefly discussed the events that transpired after that (described in detail in Rajakesari and the first half of Udhayabhanu Karmegam). Ambalavanar returns from Uraiyur and leaves the two girls in Madhura's house. The book ends here, completing one full circle. Panithirai has its moments of brilliance. The author has done well to describe a whole other parallel track of Madhura and her former life. However, a temple dance artist's life events seem mundane compared to the other tracks in this political thriller series. A shorter storyline or alternating events could have been a lot more engaging.

கதாசிரியரே 450 பக்கங்கள் வரை மதுராவின் கடந்த காலத்தை விரிவாக (flashback க்கு உள்ள இன்னொரு flashback என்று) சொல்லிவிட்டு இதற்கு மேல் விரிவாக சொன்னால் வாசகர்கள் கோவித்துக் கொள்வார்கள் என்கிறார். அவர்களின் கடந்த காலம் கதைக்கு தேவைதான் என்றாலும் அது விறுவிறுப்பில்லாத வழக்கமான குடும்ப நாவல் போல் உள்ளது.

இந்த புத்தகத்திற்கு பனித்திரை என்று பெயரிடத்திருக்கு பதிலாக மதுராவின் வாழக்கை வரலாறு என்று வைத்திருக்கலாம் . அதுவே பொருத்தமாக இருக்கும் . (மதுராவின் வாழ்வில் இருந்த பனித்திரை விலகியதால் கூட இப்படி ஒரு தலைப்பினை ஆசிரியர் தேர்ந்தெடுத்திருக்கலாம் ) அம்பலவாணர் , அடுத்த சதி என்று எல்லாத்தையும் ஒதுக்கிவைத்துவிட்டு எழுத்தாளர் நம்மை மதுராவின் வாழ்க்கையில் அவளின் இன்ப துன்பங்களில் பங்கேற்க கூட்டி சென்று சுற்றி காட்டி மீண்டும் கதைக்கு கொண்டு வந்து சேர்த்திருக்கிறார் . மதுராவிற்கு இதனை விரிவான விளக்கமான வாழக்கை வரலாறு கூறப்படுவது அடுத்த பாகத்திற்கு உதவுமா என்பதை நான் படித்து தான் தெரிந்து கொள்ளவேண்டும் . மதுராவின் வாழ்க்கை வரலாறில் வீரபாண்டியனின் மரணத்தை இணைத்த விதம் எழுத்தாளரின் எழுத்து மேன்மையை காட்டுகிறது . என்னதான் மதுராவின் நீண்ட நெடிய வரலாறு நமக்கு அவசியமில்லாதது போல் பல இடங்களில் தோன்றினாலும் , நாவாலின் எந்த இடத்திலும் சோர்வு என்பதே தெரியாத வண்ணம் இந்த பாகம் படைக்கப்பட்டிருப்பது ஒரு ஆறுதல் . எழுத்தாளரின் ரசிகர்களை ஏமாற்றாத ஆனால் தவிர்க்கப்பட்டிருக்க வேண்டிய நாவல் என்று இதை கூறலாம் . இந்த தொடரினை படிப்பவர்கள் இதை படிக்க அவசியமில்லை என்று நான் சொன்னால் கண்டிப்பாக எழுத்தாளரின் கோபத்திற்குள்ளாவேன் என்பதால் படித்து நீங்களே தெரிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள்
