The story is set around 988 CE, three years after Rajaraja I takes over the Chola throne. The Pandias, having been defeated by the Cholas in war, have retreated to the south, where they are trying to regroup and capture Madurai again. But that is the least of the Chola emperor's concerns. By then, it was apparent that some political bigwigs from the Chera kingdom were directly responsible for the death of his brother (and heir apparent), Adithya Karikalan. These forces are from the family that runs the Kandalur salai, one of the four big salais (university) in Kerala, training students in the martial art forms of ancient and medieval Kerala. Can the Cholas lay siege to a place of learning, or will the chieftains of the Chera kingdom allow them to do so? There also seem to be some internal enemies to take care of before they could start an invasion. The author, Mr. Gokul Seshadri, has traveled extensively to do his research for the book. The story revolves around real events that unfolded in the aftermath of the death of Adithya Karikalan (based on various evidence, which is mentioned as footnotes), with the help of a few fictionalized characters. Unfortunately, a translation is not yet available.

Cherar Kottai is a historical novel set during the early years of Emperor Raja raja cholan's rule, revolving around the Kandalur Salai conquest. It is a prequel to Rajakesari and few of the characters from Rajakesari appear here as well. The story is narrated from 4 viewpoints. 1st is about the travels and adventures of Paraman Malapadiyar and Kamban Maniyanar. 2nd is about the Pandyas. 3rd is about the head of the Kandalur Salai, Thirunarayana Pattathiri and his brothers. 4th is about the Emperor and his main officials. The author's description of the 4 sea ports, namely Vizhinjam, Nagapattinam, Thondi and Korkai, brings them to life in our minds. I was especially impressed with the description of Nagapattinam. The story is well paced with enough twists and turns to keep us hooked. There are 5 or 6 mysteries which are unanswered and expected to be addressed in the 2nd part like: 1. Who is the thanai thalaivar? 2. Who is devanaga pandithar? 3. What is the secret that Thirunarayana Pattathiri wanted to reveal to his brother? 4. What happened to Kurukadi Chellakilaar in the competition? 5. What is that the Emperor will ask the business men in return for giving soldiers to safeguard their ship? Overall a good read like Rajakesari. Have eagerly started reading the 2nd part now and keeping my fingers crossed to check if my hunches are correct about the answer to some of the mysteries.

எனக்கு தெரிந்த வரையில், தமிழில் வரலாற்று புதினங்களுக்கு கல்கி, சாண்டில்யன் தான் என்கிற என் எண்ணம் தவறு மட்டுமில்லை, இவர்களுக்கு இடையில் நான் என்று கோகுல் சேஷாத்ரி இடம் பிடித்துவிட்டார். சேரர் கோட்டை என்ற தலைப்பினால் சேரர்கள் பற்றியது என்று நினைத்திருந்தேன். ஆனால் சோழர்களை பற்றியது. அதுவும் தமிழர்களின் தலை சிறந்த அரசர்களில் ஒருவரான இராஜராஜரின் காலத்தை பற்றிய விறுவிறுப்பான இந்த நாவல்களை தமிழ் நாடு வந்ததும் வாங்கி வீட்டில் வைக்க வேண்டும்.
