ஐந்தாறு கதாபாத்திரங்கள் தான் அதை சுற்றியே கதை நகருகிறது. அதிலும் இரு கதாபாத்திரங்கள் கணேஷ் பட்டரும், வசந்தகுமாரனும் கணேஷ் வசந்த் சாயலில் இருப்பதாக இப்புத்தகத்தின் பின் அட்டையில் அவர்களே பதிவிட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். சுஜாதா அவர்களின் தனித்துவமான வசனங்களை தவிர வேறொன்றும் சொல்வதற்கில்லை.

The second Sujatha's story with historical background after "Ratham Ore Niram". Entertaining through out. He included his favourite Ganesh-Vasanth duo in name of Ganesha Battar and Vasantha Kumaaran in this Chola based story. Quite informative as well.This books tells about the bitter wave among Chola civilians on Tanjore temple on those days.

முதலிலேயே சொல்லிவிடுகிறேன். எப்பொழுதும் நமக்கு பிடித்தவர்கள் செய்யும் காரியங்களில் நம்மால் குறை கண்டுபிடிக்க இயலாது. சுஜாதா அவர்களின் எழுத்துக்கள் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடிக்கும். எனவே எனது விமர்சனம் நேர்மையானதாக இருக்கும் என்று கூற முடியாது. ஒரு பயாஸ்டு (Biased) விமர்சனம் என்று வைத்து கொள்வோமே. :-) வாலிபன் பெயர் வசந்தகுமாரன். ஆசானின் பெயர் கணேச பட்டர். இவ்விரு பெயர்களும் ஏனோ சுஜாதாவின் கணேஷ்-வசந்த் கதாப்பாத்திரங்களை ஞாபகப்படுத்துகிறது. புத்தகத்தில் ஆங்காங்கே சுஜாதாவின் புரியாத வசனங்கள் எட்டி பார்க்கிறது. திருதிருவென்று முழிப்பதை விட்டுவிட்டு பிறிதொரு நாள் அர்த்தம் கண்டுபிடிக்கலாம் என்று குறிப்பெடுத்து வைத்திருக்கிறேன். புத்தகத்தில் குக்கன், சுவான தோன்றல்களே, ஞமலி போன்ற வார்த்தைகள் அடிக்கடி தோன்றுகின்றன. தேடி பார்த்ததில் அனைத்திற்கும் ஒரே அர்த்தம்தான். நாய். :-)

"Kanthalur Vasanthakumaaran Kadhai" is a historical novel from Sujatha. The author needs no introduction as it would not be hyperbolic to tag his name with the phrase "the most popular novelist in contemporary Tamil literature". His popularity in Tamil literary circle has not withered for the past four decades and I hope it won't even in the years to come. Review - The book under review herein is a historical novel set in the times of Chozha Empire where a commoner falls in love with a girl from the Royal Family. He, being mistaken for a spy, lands in trouble and how his innocence is proved with the help of his master goes to spin the rest of the story. Apart from this book, Sujatha has written another historical novel entitled "Ratham Orae Niram" which is definitely one of the best among all his works. But the theme of that novel was set against the backdrop of Great Revolt of 1857 and therefore the vocabulary used therein didn't differ much from contemporary language. Nevertheless, insofar as this novel is concerned, the author at the outset itself informs the reader that he has written it how Kalki and Chandilyan would have done so and to do justice to that claim he has employed so many complex classical Tamil words which is also owing to the fact that the story is set in the times of Chozha Empire. As the old proverb "Old wine in new bottle" goes, the author has once again brought his dual heroes Ganesh and Vasanth but in a different outfit. The former remains prudent and responsible while the latter remains as pro-mischievous as ever. Although this novel wasn't that boring, comparing with the author's other historical novel, I felt that it was not upto his mark. I personally feel that my favourite author has let me down this time and that perhaps he could have done better.

I've been wanting to read this book since I read that Sujatha has written a historical novel and that too about Rajaraja Chola's time period. I couldn't get it in the 2022 Chennai book fair but got it in the 2023 book fair. The story is based on the Ganesh-Vasanth duo in a historical setting. It talks about the events preceding the Kandalur Salai war of Rajaraja Cholan. The story is fast moving. Vasanthakumaran aka vasanth is shown as a careless guy who takes most decisions without thinking. Ganesha Pattar aka ganesh saves him from most difficulties. Vasanthakumaran loves a Chola princess which gets him into trouble. He also gets branded as a Chera spy. How he overcomes these troubles mainly with help of Ganesha Pattar forms the crux of the novel. I gave 3 stars mainly because I found few shortcomings with the novel. Firstly, there are lot of old Tamil words for which meaning is not clear. A bottom note could have helped. Eventhough Sujatha gave few but it doesn't cover majority of them. Second, the timeline between events is vague and overlapping. Like they move from Poohar to Thanjai in a matter of minutes. Third, the security for the Emperor is shown as very weak. Ganesha pattar and Vasanthakumaran move within the palace quite easily and can meet the Emperor as they fancy. The security is so lacking that there are 2 attempts on the emperor's life within days. Fourth, there are errors like Ganesh pattar says that there are only 2 people who make small arrows in the country and in another chapter, he is asking an official on who makes these arrows. In one chapter, there is a physician who serves in Poohar and in another, he serves in Thanjai.Leaving these shortcomings, it is still worthwhile to read one time for its fast storyline and for its witty dialogues between the main protagonists.

சுஜாதாவின் இரண்டாம் மற்றும் கடைசி சரித்திர(?) நாவல். வசந்தகுமாரன் = வசந்த் :D கணேஷ பட்டர் = கணேஷ் :D Everytime I read something about Vasanth, I tend to fall in love with him. சோழ சாம்ராஜ்ஜியதுக்குள்ள இவங்கள விட்டு விளையாடிருக்கார் சுஜாதா. இவங்க ரெண்டு பெற தாண்டி வேற எதையுமே இந்த புத்தகத்த படிக்கற அந்த 2 மணி-நேரம் என்னால யோசிக்க முடியல. வசந்த் ஓட usual one -liners , சபல புத்தி, குறும்புத்தனம், அவசரபுத்தியால வம்புல மாட்ற விளையாட்டுத்தனம் - இதுதான் வசந்தகுமாரன். வசந்த குமாரனை காதலிக்க அழகான இளவரசி அபிமதி. வழக்கம் போல அறிவையும், நிதானத்தையும் கடைபிடித்து வசந்தகுமாரனை ஆபத்திலிருந்து காப்பாற்றும் கணேஷ பட்டர். கொஞ்சம் சரித்திர கதையென நாம் நம்ப பழுவெட்டயர்களும், ராஜராஜ சோழனும், லோகமாதேவியும், குந்தவையும் + அந்த கால வழக்க சொற்களும். ராஜராஜன் பெருவுடையார் கோவில் கட்டும் போது வந்த இடர்ப்பாடான போரை முன்னிறுத்தி, ஒரு கலகத்தை உண்டாகி , அதில் வசந்தகுமாரனை சிக்க வைத்து, சிக்கிய வசந்தகுமாரனை ராஜராஜனின் பட்டமகிஷியின் புதல்வி அபிமதியுடன் காதல் கொள்ள வைத்து, அரசியல் சூழலுக்காக அபிமதியை சாளுகியனுக்கு நிச்சயித்து, எல்லா சிக்கலில் இருந்தும் வசந்த்தை காப்பாற்ற கணேஷை... சீ.. வசந்த குமாரனை காப்பாற்ற கணேஷ பட்டரை சிக்கலில் வைத்து, கடைசியில் வசந்த குமாரனை முதல் நிலை ஒற்றனாகி என ஒரு HISTORIC COCKTAIL படைத்துள்ளார் சுஜாதா ! போர் வரும் சூழ்நிலையில் ஒரு ஒற்றனை மன்னன் எதிராளியை வேவு பார்க்க அனுப்புவது இயல்பே. அதை வைத்து அழகான கதை பின்னியுள்ளார் சுஜாதா. வசந்த குமாரன் அபிமதியை காந்தர்வ மனம் புரிந்து காந்தளூர் செல்வதில் முடியும் கதைக்கு சரியான முடிவில்லை/எழுதப்படவில்லை. வசந்தகுமாரன் உயிரோட தப்பிசானா கணேஷ பட்டர் என்ன ஆனார், அபிமதி-வசந்தகுமாரன் திருமணம் அரசியல்ல என்ன மாறுதலா கொண்டுவந்துசுன்னு logics யோசிக்காம வெறும் கதையா மட்டும் படிச்சுட்டு வந்தா நல்லா இருக்கும் ! :( காந்தளூர் வசந்தகுமாரனின் முடிவறிய இரண்டாம் பாகம் வந்திருக்கலாம் :( சுஜாதாவை தவிர யாராலும் ஒரு historic fiction கதைக்கு இயல்பான முடிவு தர முடியாது. :(

கதையெங்கணும் நம்பவே முடியாத திருப்பங்கள். உண்மையில் கதையோட்டத்தை நகர்த்திச் செல்வதே இந் நம்பவியலாத திருப்பங்கள் தான். கணேச பட்டர்-வசந்தகுமாரன் ஆகிய சோழர் காலத்து கணேஷ்-வசந்துக்காகவும் சுஜாதாவின் எழுத்து நடைக்காகவும் ஒரு முறை வாசிக்கலாம்.

*****Disappointed***** சரித்திர நாவலில் புதிதாக சொல்ல ஒன்றுமே இல்லையா? பொன்னியின் செல்வனைப் பிரதி எடுத்தார் போல ஒரு கதை. குந்தவை = அபிமதி வந்தியத்தேவன் = வசந்தகுமாரன் ஆழ்வார்க்கடியான் நம்பி = கணேச பட்டர் ஒரு இளவரசி(குந்தவை/அபிமதி ) அவளைக் காதலிக்கும் ஒரு சாதாரண ஆண்(வந்தியத்தேவன்/வசந்தகுமாரன்). அவனைக் காப்பற்ற கொஞ்சம் அறிவு அதிகம் அல்லது பொறுமை உள்ள ஒரு ஆசான்(ஆழ்வார்க்கடியான் நம்பி/கணேச பட்டர்). நாயகன் முதல் நாவலின் கடைசியில் ஒரு பயணத்திற்குப் புறப்படுகிறான். ஒரு ஒரு அத்தியாயத்தையும் முடிக்கும் பொது இருக்க வேண்டிய திருப்பங்கள் தேவையே இல்லாமல் திணிப்பது போல் உள்ளது. தொடர் கதையை ஒரு முழு நாவலாக வாசிப்பதில் இருக்கும் மனச்சோர்வே இதிலும் மிஞ்சுகிறது. ஒரே ஒரே ஆறுதல் பெரிய கோவில் காட்டும் போது மக்கள் நிலம் இழந்ததையும் அவர்கள் கொண்ட அதிருப்தியையும் பதிவு பண்ணியதே.

'ஓ' வார்த்தையையும் 'தே' வார்த்தையுமே பிரயோகித்து bore அடித்து போன நமக்கு , "குக்கன் மகனே , சுவானத் தோன்றலே , ஞமிலி " என பல பல புது வார்த்தைகள் பிரயோகிக்க கற்று தந்த சுஜாதாவிற்கு முதலில் நன்றி . வசந்தகுமாரன் மகாபாரத அர்ஜுனன் போன்றவன் . அதற்காக காண்டீபம் ஏந்தி வில்வித்தை புரிபவன் என்று ஏமாந்து விடாதீர்கள் . சபலம் , மது , மாது , வீண் வம்பு , வெட்டி வீராப்பு , முக்கியமாக பெண் வேடம் தரிப்பதில் கை தேர்ந்தவன் . சில நேரங்களில் வந்தியதேவனை ஒற்றவன் . அதிகமாக காதல் செய்கிறான் . குறும்புகார புத்தி . விளையாட்டு இளைஞன் . கணேச பட்டர் - வசந்தனின் ஆசான் . அனிருத பிரமராயரை ஒத்த கதாபாத்திரம் . கடமையும் கருத்துமாக இருக்கும் ஆசாமி . வசந்தகுமரனை பல இன்னல்களில் இருந்து விடுவிக்கிறார் . அபிமதி - பார்த்த மாத்திரத்தில் வசந்த குமரனை காதலிக்க தொடங்குகிறாள் . வசந்தகுமரனின் நேர் எதிர் சாயல் கொண்டவள் . நியூடனின் மூன்றாம் விதியை சுஜாதா இங்கு பிரயோகிதிருப்பது கதை நகர்வதற்கு ஊன்றுகோலாய் இருக்கிறது . சிறிய சம்பாஷனை : ராஜராஜ சோழன் , குந்தவை போன்ற பொன்னியின் செல்வன் கதாபாத்திரங்கள் வந்தாலும் , வந்தியத்தேவன் இல்லாதது மிக பெரிய ஏமாற்றமே . வந்தியதேவனும் வசந்தகுமாரனும் சம்பாஷனை செய்திருந்தால் எவ்வளவு சூப்பராக இருந்திருக்கும் . புத்தகத்தின் துவக்கதிலேயே ஆசிரியர் காந்தளூர் போர் சமயத்தில் நிகழ்ந்த ஒரு சிறிய பகுதி என சொல்லி இருந்தால்தால் கதையில் இருக்கும் பல twistகள் twistகளாகவே இருக்க கதை முற்று பெறுகிறது . வசந்தகுமாரன் கொல்லபட்டானா ? கணேசபட்டர் என்ன ஆனார் ? சாளுக்யன் நல்லவனா ? யவனனை கொன்றது யார் என பல கேள்விகள் விடை இல்லாமலே முற்று பெறுகிறது . வழக்கம் போல் வாசகர்களிடமே கதையின் முடிவை விட்டு விடுகிறார் சுஜாதா . கதையில் சுஜாதாவின் சோழர் கால தமிழை பார்க்கும்போது , நம்ம சென்னை தமிழில் பிளந்து கட்டும் சுஜாதாவா இது ? என ஆச்சர்ய பட வைக்கிறார் . புத்தகத்தை மூடி வைக்கும் போது , பொன்னியின் செல்வனுக்குள் ஒரு jolly ride போனது போல ஒரு உணர்வு ஏற்படுவது இயல்பே .
