Karmegam (Dark clouds) is book I in the Udhayabanu historical fiction series. This series is a sequel to author's well known earlier works - Rajakesari and Cherar Kottai.

Early 11th Century CE. Tamiḷ Nādu. Chōḷa capital Thanjāvūr has just witnessed a chilling assassination attempt on emperor Rājarāja Chōḷa’s life. While the motive and identity of the assassins are unclear, evidences suggest that the plot might have been hatched from Chēra country - erstwhile Kērala kingdom. The book describes a good detail of the life of music and dance artists during those period through the story of Madura. Although it deviates from the main story, it is worth reading as the author attempt to narrate the life of people during the story period is commendable.

முக்கியமான இரண்டே விடயம் தான் இந்த நாவலில். ஒன்று சந்தேகப்படும் ஒருவனை துரத்திப் பிடிக்கிறார்கள், இரண்டு மதுராவின் கடந்த காலம். மதுரா நகைகளை கடன் வாங்கி அணிவதை அம்மா கண்டிக்கிறார் எனும் போது, அதைச் சுற்றி ஒரு நிகழ்வு வரும் என்று எதிர்பார்த்து ஏமாந்தேன். தனியாக பேச வேண்டும் என்று சொல்லியும் இரண்டு வருடங்களுக்கு மேல் அவர்களுக்கு பேச வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கவில்லை என்பது கொஞ்சம் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளும்படி இல்லை.

The story starts where Rajakesari left off. The two protagonists of the previous novel get entangled in another web of mystery as they try to unearth what led to the series of events described in Rajakesari. And that's where the buck stops. The second half of this book is solely dedicated to Madhura (temple dance artist and former love interest of Paraman). While it was fascinating to read her story, I felt it drags on. The pace of Rajakesari and Cherar Kottai (and the first half of this novel) is missing. The stories are set in different places with different characters in the previous parts. The author switches between them and keeps the readers engaged with cliffhangers in between. The second half of karmegam runs on a single track, and this change is missing. At one point, it became too monotonous and completing the book felt like a chore in the end. My two cents: Madhura could tell her own story to someone in Thanjavur. And this could be alternated with the scenes at Uraiyur and Kodumbalur. Doing so would provide a refreshing contrast to the flow of the story.

முதல் இரண்டு பாகங்கள் சுவாரசியமாக இருந்தது. மூன்றாம் பாகம் மதுரா எனும் கதாபாத்திரம் வரும் முன் வரை நன்றாக இருந்தது. இக்கதையில் மதுரா எனும் கதாபாத்திரம் இல்லாமல் அல்லது வெறும் இரு பாகங்கள் மட்டும் இருந்திருந்தால் நன்றாக இருக்கும். தீபிகா அருணின் ஒலி படைப்பு அருமை.

Udhayabanu Karmegam is the sequel of Rajakesari. It starts with describing the recovery of Ambalavanar from his injuries (detailed in Rajakesari) and his shifting to Thanjavur. All this takes a few months. The Chola Emperor Rajaraja Cholan has some plans for Ambalavanar and Paraman Malapadiyar and he himself undertakes a mysterious trip down south. Meanwhile an unexpected message leads the duo to Uraiyur from where they unravel a different angle of the Rajakesari incident. This forms 2/3 rd of the book and is pacy when the duo are on the hunt. The book then changes track and relates the story of Madhuravasagi upto her arrival at Thanjavur. This part read more like a social novel rather than a thriller. I enjoyed both parts of the book. While the part involving Ambalavanar and Paraman Malapadiyar was engrossing, the part involving Madhura was educating (in the sense that it was informative and gave good insights into how the life of women who were involved in the services of the temples was during those times). The author's trademark traits (such as providing interesting tidbits at the page bottom, illustrations and maps) are there in this book as well. His efforts and creativity are visible throughout as he combines real facts from inscriptions and uses them to bring out the customs and traditions of the times. Started reading the next book in this series and eager to see how the story unfolds further.

கோகுல் சேஷாத்ரி . தமிழில் அதிகம் கவனிக்கப்படவேண்டிய ஆனால் பெரிதாக கவனிக்கப்படாத புதின எழுத்தாளர் . சோழர் வரலாற்றை சார்ந்த புதினங்கள் எழுதுவதில் இவர் அளவு ஆர்வம் உள்ளவர் தற்காலத்தில் யாருமில்லை என்று சொல்லலாம் . அதுவும் ராஜராஜ சோழனின் ஆட்சி காலத்தை சார்ந்து இவர் எழுதிய ( நான் படித்ததில் இதுவரை ) அத்தனையும் முத்துக்களே . அதுவும் சோழ சமராஜ்யத்தை விவரிக்கையில் கோகுலின் கற்பனைகள் எவை உண்மையில் இருந்தது எவை என்பதை புரிந்து கொள்ள செயற்கை நுண்ணறிவே வேண்டும் என்று சொன்னால் அது மிகையாகாது . எழுத்தின் நடை என்று எடுத்து கொண்டாலும் சரி , கதாபாத்திர வடிவமைப்பு , கதை நகர்த்தும் விதம் , சோழ சாம்ராஜ்யத்தை விவரிக்கும் விதம் என்று எடுத்து செய்யும் அத்தனை விசயத்திலும் கோகுல் சேஷாத்ரி தெறிக்கவிடுகிறார் . ராஜகேசரி , சேரர் கோட்டையை தொடர்ந்து வெளிவந்திருக்கும் இந்த நாவல் அந்த இரண்டு நாவல்களுக்கு சற்றும் குறைவில்லாமல் ரசிகர்களை நாற்காலியின் நுனியிலே உட்கார வைக்குமளவு பரபரப்பும் , திருப்பங்களும் நிரம்பியுள்ளதாக இருக்கிறது . அநேகமாக எதிர்காலத்தில் பொன்னியின் செல்வன் நாவலால் வந்தியத்தேவன் கதாபாத்திரம் எப்படி பிரபலமடைந்து பேசப்பட்டதோ அதே போல் அம்பலவாணர் கதாபாத்திரம் வருங்கால இலக்கிய உலகில் கண்டிப்பாக பேசப்படும் என்பதில் எந்த சந்தேகமும் இல்லை . மற்ற இரண்டு நாவல்களை விட கார்மேகத்தில் கதாபாத்திர பின்னணிகள் விரிவாக பேசப்பட்டிருப்பதால் (வேறு யாரு மதுர தான் ) அடுத்து வரும் நாவல்களில் அந்த கதாபாத்திரங்களின் முக்கியத்துவம் அதிகமாக இருக்கும் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கிறேன் . கண்டிப்பாக தமிழக மன்னர் புதின தொடர்கதைகளில் தவிர்க்க முடியாத ஒரு தொடராக உதயபானு அமையும் என்கிற நம்பிக்கை முதல் பாகத்தை படிக்கவும் தெளிவாய் தெரிகிறது . இரண்டாம் பாகத்தை எடுத்து படிக்கச் ஆரம்பித்துவிட்டேன் . அடுத்த பாகம் எப்படி இருக்கும் , அதற்கான என் மதிப்பீடு எப்படி இருக்கும் என்று உங்களை நானும் எதிர்நோக்கி இருக்க , எழுத்தாளர் எனது எதிர்பார்ப்புகளை ஏமாற்றமாட்டார் என்கிற நம்பிக்கையுடன் படிக்க உட்காருகிறேன் .
