I grew up near Madurai and I never know that there were walls around Madurai. This book gives a clear picture of Madurai history for morethan 600 years. It talks about the people and kings during those days. Must read.

Loved it

I always wanted to read about 13th to 19 century tamil nadu. This is one of the best novels i read will remember it for my lifetime.

A masterpiece!

I got this after indulging in Vel Paari ( this author’s more recent publication ). The style of this book is completely different. The narration is exceptional. The book has no one story, no one plot, no specific hero, no specific climax, yet it reads like one big novel that you just can’t put down.. felt like watching a cohesive, comprehensive and compelling documentary. Log time ago when I read about how Spartans prepared themselves to be that invincible warriors, I always wondered whether there were any such parallels in southern part of Indian continent. When this author describes how Thathanoor prepares their folk, though the objectives may be different, I found my answers. I’m a Tamilian by birth. After reading this book I started questioning what does it even mean to be Tamilian, given all the intertwining of cultures over many centuries? A real eye-opener and gives you a truly broad perspective.

Untold tales and history of Madurai city and a fictional village filled with thieves and guards who are no different to one another. Has a lot of emotionally high moments throughout. The first few chapters will be hard to read for a beginner but hang on and continue for the treasure inside.

This is a great novel. A classic. The only thing that is stopping me from rating this novel a 5 star is that it sometimes meanders into the sub plots too much taking away the interest from the main narrative.

Need patience to read this complete book. Story takes us few centuries back and tells us about how people are bravely lived and died with more struggles.We’re more fortunate to live in this century with more freedom.

ஆசிரியர் ஒரு வரலாற்றுக் கதையைச் சிறப்பாக எழுதியிருக்கிறார்.கதையின் தொடக்கத்தில் செல்வார்,கொல்லவாரு என நிறைய .....வாருக்களைப் பற்றி எழுதி இருக்கிறார்.யார் இந்த வாருக்கள் என்பது பற்றி ஒரு பின்னிணைப்பு தந்திருந்தால் நன்றாக இருந்திருக்கும்.வழக்காடு சொற்களும் மிகையாக வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது .அவற்றிற்கான பொருள் உரையும் பின்னிணைப்பாகத் தந்திருந்தால் நன்றாக அமைந்திருக்கும்.கதையின் போக்கினை இவைகள் ஓரளவிற்குத் தடங்கல் செய்கின்றது.

As a Madurai native, Kaaval Kottam is such an immersive experience and took me on a deeply educational & eye-opening journey. From 1300s to 1900s - the cities evolution from the eyes of a village /tribe, which played an integral part all through and then disappears to colonial oppression. I understand so much about my own people reading this, than from my 36 years of association with the city. Must read.

Good novel which explains the history of temple city starting with mughal period. Only bad thing is its bit heavy to carry on hand ;) Go for it if you are from madurai or want to know about madurai. highly advisable.

I hated madurai but not anymore. Thanks to s.venkatesan for his research and his language. Its very long, but if you love this narration you wont feel the time!
