Little is known about the Tamil liberation cause and struggle, as it has been widely dismissed by global powers of all persuasions—the USA, Russia, China and India—each driven by their own realpolitik concerns and self- interests. This book, written by a Diaspora Tamil engaged in human rights work in the Tamil-controlled area of Vanni up until it was overrun by Sri Lankan forces, provides a compe…

Eye opener in many respects on how international agencies and NGOs think and operate.

This is such an eye opener! Being so near to be a victim of one of the most inhuman genocides history has ever known, this is gonna stay very important to me. This book speaks facts, accounted very clear and crisp by a person who herself had seen it all in close quarters; the impacts of the global socio-economic factors and other big players in the fight for an independent nation by an oppressed defacto state.

An interesting read. Most books on the LTTE focus on the stories of people (civilian or LTTE) during or after the war, or they focus on the LTTE as an organization. N. Malathy's book discusses life in the LTTE territory during the ceasefire, and the relationships that existed between the LTTE, NGOs, and the Tamil civilian population. Also of note was the surprising number of institutions, reforms, and interventions the LTTE launched in an attempt to create a sort of proto state government and bureaucracy. What stood stood out most was the sometimes bizarre behavior of the NGOs that became more clear when you realized their biggest incentive was continued funding. Many NGOs spent a disproportionate amount of effort on the issue of child soldiers (most of whom were teens who voluntarily joined, and in some cases would run away and beg to be readmitted once released). The reason for this turns out there was a lot of funding tied to child soldiers which was a "sexy" issue in the 2000s which meant NGOs would often ignore most other human rights issue to focus on child soldiers even after the issue had been mostly addressed. Also interesting was the extreme reluctance of NGOs to publicly admit what they privately acknowledged was that in several ways the LTTE had created a proto-state that addressed some social issues better than actual South Asian states (the absence of street children, and the high standards in orphanages was one example). This was because it would've been a huge taboo to praise a registered terrorist organization that repeatedly used suicide bombings.

I was looking for a book that told the inside account of what it was REALLY like during the ceasefire between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Rebels in 2002-2006 without the propaganda. Since this was written by a Human rights expatriate who came to volunteer, it gives an OUTSIDE-IN approach. What I really liked about the book is it addresses the real concerns on the ground. I did not like the idea hof child soldiers; and in this book Her experiences spanned working with the LTTE to release child soldiers, preparing documentation for peace talks for the same body, documenting human rights violations by the Sri Lankan military and working on a project to raise awareness of domestic violence. I'd recommend this to (a). for anyone genuinely interested because this is first hand knowledge from a Human Rights Activist, who herself was sent on a ship to the 'internment camp' during the final days. (b). Students in the subjects of Ethnic Conflicts, Women's liberation, Child Soldiers, or Peace Studies. Reviews on this book: --------------------
Quotes

“Though I did not have the statistics, just observing the number of women on the streets during peak hours dressed for work, it was obvious that a greater percentage of women in Vanni went to work outside the home. There were also more women in civilian clothes riding motorbikes on Vanni roads compared to the rest of the island. Women, both LTTE members as well as civilians, occupied the public space in large numbers. They were very visible on the roads and in the LTTE institutions. This gave Vanni a uniquely pro-woman character, which was absent elsewhere on the island. ...

It was a unique kind of feminism, created by connecting the majority of women living all over Vanni, from all walks of life, for public action regarding women and children in need of help”
